The head of the Free Patriotic Movement, MP Gebran Bassil, refuted the reality of the electricity sector, criticizing the performance of the current Ministry of Energy, and considering that the supply reaching zero hours at the same time as rising bills is “unacceptable and unprecedented.” Bassil accused the Lebanese Forces of obstructing the electricity plans drawn up by the movement's ministers, considering that the 2026 plan does not include, in his opinion, clear implementation programs, and that the "micro-grids" project paves the way for legalizing the operation of generators. He also criticized the management of the fuel file, speaking about irregularities in its import and the cost of the ships, and accusing those in charge of the file of causing additional losses to citizens and the treasury. Bassil recalled the electricity plan that was approved in 2010, and said that it aimed to provide 24-hour supply while reducing the cost of production and achieving a surplus for the treasury. He pointed out that the supply during his team’s tenure as ministry ranged between 16 and 21 hours per day, compared to 0 to 4 or 5 hours currently. Bassil estimated that the decrease in nutrition costs citizens billions of dollars annually as a result of relying on generators, pointing to the cost difference between Lebanon’s electricity, generators, and ships. He concluded by declaring that the Movement is considering filing a complaint before the judiciary if the situation continues, speaking of “waste” and “huge losses” affecting citizens and the treasury.
